You may load any chance of citadel hits (if you really had that chance in the first place, given the situation), but at least you'll get some damage, and if you do start fires, and get some consistent hits to keep the fires burning, what you lose by not getting high damage AP hits, you may make up for with HE and long burning fire damage. In that situation, you may find it challenging for your weaker guns to penetrate such a target, and shooting HE rounds makes for a useful alternative, particularly since (IIRC) high caliber HE rounds have a higher chance of starting fires than small caliber ones. This isn't a common situation, but it does occur once in a while.Īnother situation is when you're in a BB that's 3 tiers down from the top tier enemy BB (such as a tier 7 Colorado having to shoot at a tier 10 Yamato). However, if I do have to engage a DD I will be certain to have HE rounds as the next ammo to be loaded after I fire the AP rounds that are already loaded.Īlso, I find that there are times when facing BB's at extreme angles that AP rounds have trouble reliably penning (such as aiming at a BB that is almost or totally bow on to your guns) and that HE rounds provide more reliable damage. And I won't unload my guns to switch to HE if I see a DD. Oh, there's no doubt that AP is my primary ammo. AP or nothin for me in any BB, i dont even waste teh time to shell switch vs DD's
